Fenomén západního světa se nám doslova pod rukama proměňuje – z něčeho dříve oslavovaného se stává absurdní a temná dystopická realita. Temný svět za Atlantickým oceánem, o kterém už dávno nejde snít jako o zemi zaslíbené a plné možností, jelikož tyto sny se proměnily v noční můru vzestupujícího fašismu, opiátové krize a nedostupného bydlení.
Video esej Trying to stay critical, in Florida Country Club je zamyšlením nad proměnou představy Západu z pohledu někoho, kdo vyrostl s nadšením pro americký sen, a ocitá se v umělé bublině rekreačního centra světa – ráji amerických zbohatlých důchodců v River Strand Country Clubu, v samém srdci Manatee County na Floridě.

Trying to stay critical, in Florida Country Club is a video essay by artist František Štípek, created as his video/film debut out of a fascination with the obscene political and cultural situation in the United States – a situation which, despite his clearly critical intent, he perceives more as a bizarre kind of aesthetic theatre.
The phenomenon of the Western world is transforming before our very eyes – what was once celebrated has shifted into an absurd and dark dystopian reality. The once-dreamed-of land of promise beyond the Atlantic has become a place from which dreams have vanished, replaced by a nightmarish landscape of rising fascism, the opioid crisis, and unaffordable housing.
This video essay reflects on the collapse of the Western ideal, as seen through the eyes of someone who grew up with sincere enthusiasm for the American Dream, only to find themselves immersed in the artificial bubble of a global recreation zone – the paradise of affluent American retirees in River Strand Country Club, at the heart of Manatee County, Florida.
Images of empty streets, cookie-cutter houses adorned with fluttering American flags, and the eerie quiet disrupted only by passing golf carts are juxtaposed with a visit to a nearby temple of American decadence: Universal Studios.
Structured in three chapters titled after biblical references, the video explores the current perception of reality in Western society. The accelerating absurdity of political figures calling for a return to “traditional values,” while much of the population drifts into helpless madness – glimpsed through short, fragmented clips we consume daily – is only a fraction of what is truly unfolding.
Are natural disasters the planet’s answer to the path humanity has taken?
Or is this divine punishment?
Is America – and the once-celebrated Western world along with it – heading straight for hell?
